Are there any beach areas between San Diego and San Clemente to avoid? Originally Posted by Ldoubled. It may be underwater on a high tide. Again just observe the regular swimmers and verify with a local what your planning to do. Nobody wants to see anyone get hurt. Others are swimming to the Scripps Pier about 3 miles round trip.
Some of these longer swims have a kayak escort. La Jolla Cove is a great place to swim. Even if you see another swimmer dive. A flat rock that people jump from. I did it when I was a kid. Jump at your own risk. It would be a good idea to at least have a rash guard type shirt and goggles. This type found on Amazon is fine. Swimming for a half-hour can get a little cold.
Wet suits for diving and surfing are less flexible near the shoulders. Swimming in the ocean is much more challenging than a pool. Fins can really help. The saltwater can really tear up your feet where the fin rubs. The booties also help to enter and exit the water. A sharp rock can ruin your day. Lifeguards rarely close the beach for large surf. They may require fins on a large surf day. If the surf is large check out the locals. Check it out first. Then invest in gear. Craigslist is also full of good used gear.
If you do buy a neoprene bathing cap, get a bright yellow one. Something that the lifeguard can see at a distance. If you get in trouble wave that hat in the air. A bright color will be easier for the lifeguard to see. This a favorite spot to snorkel and see fish. At times the visibility is 20 feet. In my opinion, the best part of swimming in the ocean off San Diego is the marine life. A wayward whale has even come near the La Jolla Cove. Large sea turtles and huge hundred-pound black bass have been seen by swimmers.
La Jolla Cove is an ecological area. Even shells or pieces of the corral. Every now and then one might swim over to the cove.
Sea lions are more common in the cove area. Some of these sea lions can be lbs. The last thing you want to do is try and hang on for a ride. There have been times where conditions bring thousands. The jellyfish around San Diego just sting a little. Nothing crazy like jellyfish from other parts of the world. You may see large manta rays. Some 5 feet across.
I used to worry about these large rays until I visited Belize. We same with dozens of huge rays. You really just need to watch out from the barb on the tail. Not the whole tail, but just the barb. Plus the ray may just swim by.
Stingrays can be an issue on San Diego beaches. Especially when the water warms up. On other beaches, do the stingray shuffle. Just drag your feet in the sand. Any stingray will get scared and swim away. If you do get a sting, see the lifeguard.
They will have some warm water and medicine. If you ran off to an emergency room they would laugh at you. Sharks certainly live in the San Diego ocean waters. We are visiting their home when we swim in the ocean. This was 10 years ago. This was the last time I heard of a death from a shark in the San Diego area.
Get a bright-colored wet suit if this is a real concern. One of the greatest times of the year is when the leopard sharks visit La Jolla Cove. When the water warms and the bait moves to the shallow water.
These 5-foot leopard sharks are everywhere. You might be swimming with a hundred. Every now and then a great white will be hanging out on a local San Diego beach. The lifeguards will get on the loudspeaker to clear the water.
