These include stepping, obstruction, contact, replay and intimidation. I think that's all of them. A penalty pass is different from a free pass in netball because: A free pass is awarded to the opposing team because the infringement made by the other team only affected one player stepping, replay, breaking BUT A penalty pass is awarded to the opposing team because the infringement made by the other team affected two or more players contact, obstruction.
An obstruction in netball is when you stand with in 3ft of the player and you with your arms over the ball. So you would get pulled up for obstrustion and now you would have to stand beside the player you were defending!
The difference between basketball and netball is that in basketball you can take more than 2 steps and dribble up the court, but in netball the most amount of steps you can take is 2 and you are put in certain positions.
Another difference is that netball is played in thirds and basketball in halves. Netball is played in thirds, basketball in half's. Netball is non-contact, while basketball is contact. Netball nets are similar to basketball nets but have no backboard are taller and smaller in diameter.
Netball has seven players, basketball has five. Netball players have bibs and specific positions, basketball does not. THey have to be aware of fouls and contact between players. The contact rule of netball is that you are not allowed any contact. If contact occurs then a penalty pass is awarded to the opposite team. You have to stand aside and the other team gets the ball. In handball you have goals and in netball you have a net like in basketball.
Balls are different. Netball is mostly only played by females. The opposite team will have a penalty pass, and you then have to stand next to the player who takes it. A player who has left the court may not defend another player whether they are on or off the court.
A player who has left the court to retrieve the ball or take a throw-in must be allowed to re-enter the court where they left it or took the throw-in from. Foul Play is anything a player does within the field of play that is contrary to the letter and spirit of the Rules of the Game. This includes dangerous play, unfair play, and dissent with the umpire. An umpire will decide what level of sanction is required from within the Game Management spectrum of sanctions, Cautions, Warnings or Suspensions.
Our leagues run anything from week seasons throughout the year depending on how many teams are in your league. After a season is finished we go into a new season straight away. Pre-game protocol A netball team consists of 7 players in different positions. All positions have designated areas on court as below: GS — allowed in their attacking goal third and shooting circle GA — allowed in the centre third, attacking goal third and the shooting circle WA — allowed in the centre third and attacking goal third, but not the shooting circle C — allowed in all thirds but neither shooting circle WD — allowed in the centre third and defensive goal third, but not the shooting circle GD — allowed in the centre third, defensive goal third and the shooting circle GK — allowed in their defensive goal third and shooting circle Games are played in 4 equal quarters of 8 minutes with a 1 min break between each quarter.
Sanctions and advantage There are 2 types of sanction in netball: Free pass — When a rule is broken that does not directly affect another player eg footwork. The player taking either type of sanction must still obey all netball rules.
Start of play The controlling umpire will blow their whistle for the start of play when the attacking C is in possession of the ball and with at least one foot wholly within the centre circle. Sanction — Free pass where the incorrectly positioned player was The centre pass must be caught within the centre third. Sanction — Throw-in awarded to the team who did not touch the ball on court last A Throw-in is set where the umpire indicates. The ball must pass through the ring from above, and must have passed through the ring before time ends for the goal to count Sanction — A free pass to the opposing team outside the circle If the ball passes through the ring after being deflected by a defender, then the goal will stand.
Offside A player is deemed offside if any part of their body makes contact with the ground in an area that they are not allowed to enter. Sanction — Free pass to the opposing team where the player went offside Footwork A player may not re-ground their landing foot whilst in possession of the ball. Sanction — Free pass to the opposing team where the player caught the ball Held Ball Once gaining possession of a ball a player must release the ball within 3 seconds Sanction — Free pass to the opposing team where the player caught the ball Playing the ball A player may gain possession of the ball by catching the ball either from another player or rebounding of the goalpost or rolling the ball to oneself.
Sanction — Free pass to the opposing team where the player caught the ball Over a Third The ball must be caught or touched by a player in each third of the court. Sanction — Free pass to the opposing team by the transverse line in the third where the ball entered incorrectly Obstruction — Of a player with the ball An opposing player may not attempt to defend a player in possession of the ball if they are within 3 feet of the landing foot of the player with the ball.
Sanction — Penalty Pass where the infringer was stood An opposing player who is the correct distance from the player in possession of the ball may attempt to defend the ball by jumping upwards, provided that if they land closer than 3 feet they do not interfere with the shooting or passing action.
When you first start playing netball the rules can seem really complicated. Another thing to watch out for is catching the ball at the same time as one of your teammates — it can count as a pass. How to avoid getting called: Make sure that you pass the ball with plenty of space between you and your teammate. Ever wonder why everyone runs back to their centre pass positions after a goal has been scored?
How to avoid getting called: Run straight back to your starting position as soon as a goal is scored. Covering piercings up with a plaster is not adequate! The only exception is a wedding band or a medical alert bracelet which can be worn but must be taped up.
Nails must be kept short. As a guideline, nails should be no longer than 1mm long and should not be seen from the underside of the finger. This is to protect other players from injury.
This is not a popular rule but it will be strictly enforced to avoid any unnecessary injuries occurring to players taking part in the league. For the first week or two, the umpires may be lenient and give you a second chance to correct a technical fault such as stepping onto the court as you take a throw in , instead of giving the free pass to the opposing team.

Substitutions Substitutions can only be made at half time or when a player is injured. Playing positions and their roles on the court There are seven playing positions in a team. Footwork A player can receive the ball: With both feet grounded or jump to catch the ball and land on two feet simultaneously. You may then take a step in any direction with one foot but not both and pivot on the spot with the other foot. Once one foot is moved, the other is considered to be the landing foot. With one foot grounded or jump to catch the ball and land on one foot. The landing foot cannot be moved, other than to pivot on the spot, whilst the other foot can be moved in any direction.
Once the landing foot is lifted, it must not be re-grounded until the ball is released. Hopping or dragging the landing foot is not allowed. If you break the footwork rule, a free pass will be awarded to the opposing team Obstruction A player attempting to intercept or defend the ball must be at least 3ft 0.
